Meet This Month’s Gulf Coast Mom: Brook Legg

There’s something incredibly special about moms who quietly pour their whole hearts into their families while finding beauty in the everyday — and this month’s Gulf Coast Mom feature is exactly that kind of mom.

Meet Brook Legg — homeschool mom of seven (yes, seven!), nature lover, macro photographer, coffee-in-hand encourager, and someone who clearly believes in slowing down enough to notice what matters most. Between homeschooling teens, cheering on kids at track meets, and capturing the tiny wonders of nature through her camera lens, Brook is the kind of mom who reminds us that motherhood doesn’t have to be flashy to be meaningful.

A Little About Brook

Brook is right in the thick of what she lovingly calls the “middle stages” of motherhood. She’s currently homeschooling three kids ages 11–15, while also cheering on two young adults (19 and 22), plus two grown stepdaughters.

In other words? She’s seen a lot of stages of motherhood — and is still living it every single day.

When she’s not teaching at home or supporting her kids at homeschool track and cross-country meets, you’ll likely find her outside enjoying family walks or noticing details most of us would miss through her love of macro nature photography.

And here’s something fun: some of Brook’s photography will soon be featured in an upcoming children’s book. How cool is that?

Quick Favorites We Love

Go-to coffee order: Plain black coffee (a classic mom answer if we’ve ever heard one)

Favorite TV show: Tiny World and nature documentaries

Favorite movie:Nim’s Island

Favorite books:The Bible and The Velveteen Rabbit

Car ride soundtrack: “Lilies and Sparrows” by Jess Ray or whatever’s playing on K-LOVE

Why Mississippi?

Brook says one of her favorite things about raising a family in Mississippi is the kindness of the people and the familiar comfort of Southern living.

“It doesn’t stay too cold for too long,” she says — and honestly, we felt that.

For her family, some of the sweetest Mississippi moments happen on homeschool track fields, at cross-country meets, and during simple family walks together. It’s proof that sometimes the best family traditions aren’t elaborate — they’re just consistent.

Passion Projects Worth Celebrating

While Brook says her main work is simply being a homeschooling mom and raising her family, we absolutely have to spotlight her creative side.

Her passion project? Nature macro photography — capturing the tiny, beautiful details of God’s creation that many of us walk right past.

And in true humble mom fashion, she casually mentioned that several of her photos are being featured in an upcoming children’s book by local author and artist duo Perry Guy and Tami Curtis Guy. (Excuse us while we give that the standing ovation it deserves.)

Gulf Coast Gems She Loves

Brook loves recommending local children’s book author Perry Guy and artist Tami Curtis Guy, whose studio is located in Bay St. Louis. Their creativity, storytelling, and art are something she loves sharing with others — and we love a good local recommendation from a fellow mom.

One Thing You Probably Don’t Know About Brook

Back in 2012, Brook wrote a devotional for homeschool moms called Healing Rhythms of Home: 30 Days of Devotion for the Homeschool Mom.

Because apparently homeschooling multiple kids while encouraging other moms wasn’t enough.

Mom Wisdom We’re Taking With Us

Parenting hack she swears by?

“Not everything is an emergency.”

Brook says it’s important to take time to process, pray, and not always feel pressured to give instant answers — and honestly, that one hit home.

Best advice from another mom?

A homeschool friend once reminded her:

“Good, better, best. There are so many good things we can do, but seek the Lord for what is best for your family and children — and that’s not necessarily going to look like everyone else.”

We’re pretty sure every mom needed that reminder today.

One Free Saturday? Here’s the Dream.

A coffee in hand and wandering antique stores.

Simple. Slow. Peaceful.

And honestly? After raising seven kids, we’d say she’s earned it.

Brook, thank you for letting us celebrate you this month. Moms like you are the heartbeat of the Gulf Coast — quietly showing up, loving your people well, and reminding the rest of us that there is beauty in the everyday.

Want to nominate a Gulf Coast Mom to be featured? We’d love to hear her story!
